The Mirena IUD

More than 45,000 adverse events have been reported from the use of the Mirena IUD, according to the FDA.

The Mirena IUD

The IUD, or Intra-Uterine Device, is intended to be used as a long-term form of birth control by emitting hormones continuously for 5 years. The IUD is a more convenient form of birth control for patients who cannot or do not wish to take oral contraceptives on a daily basis.

About the Mirena IUD Controversy

Lawsuits have been filed against Bayer, and accuse the company of knowingly marketing and producing a defective product, and failing to reveal the dangerous side effects of such device.  For instance, Mirena’s label failed to warn doctors and consumers about serious problems from the use of this device, and described the complications as “uncommon” even though thousands of women have been affected by complications caused by this long-term contraceptive.

Side Effects of the Mirena IUD

The Mirenda IUD has been known to cause the following serious complications:
  • Vaginal hemorrhage
  • Perforation of the Uterine Wall
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Migration of the IUD to Outside the Uterus, including, but not limited to
    • Migration to the abdomen
    • Migration through the opening of one of the fallopian tubes
  • Expulsion of the Mirena IUD
  • Infection
  • Complications that Result in Surgery to Remove Mirena IUD
  • Life-threatening ectopic pregnancy – pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus
